The money that
can't be watched.
Monero is the gold standard of financial privacy in the digital age. Every transaction is invisible by default, every coin is fungible, and no one can ever trace where your money comes from or goes.
What is Monero?
Monero (XMR) is an open-source, privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in April 2014. Unlike Bitcoin, where all transactions are permanently visible on a public blockchain, Monero was built from day one with a single goal: genuine financial privacy for every user.
The word "Monero" means "coin" in Esperanto — a language designed to belong to everyone. That philosophy is baked into XMR itself. It is decentralized, community-governed, and has never had a pre-mine, an ICO, or founder rewards. Every coin in existence was earned by network participants.
At its core, Monero uses three cryptographic technologies — Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and RingCT — to make every transaction unlinkable and untraceable by default. You cannot opt out of privacy, and neither can anyone spying on you.
Three layers of
cryptographic privacy
Monero does not ask you to trust its developers, its government, or its exchange. It asks you to trust math — and math has never broken.
Ring Signatures
When you send XMR, your transaction is cryptographically mixed with 15 other past transactions. An external observer cannot determine which of the 16 possible senders actually signed. The sender is hidden in a crowd.
Stealth Addresses
Every transaction generates a one-time address on behalf of the recipient. Even if you give your public address to the whole world, no one can link incoming transactions to you or to each other on the blockchain.
RingCT
Ring Confidential Transactions hide the amount being transferred. The network can verify that inputs equal outputs (no coins created from thin air) without ever knowing the actual values involved.
Before a transaction even hits the public peer-to-peer network, Dandelion++ obscures which IP address originated it — making network-level surveillance dramatically harder.
Monero vs Bitcoin —
an honest comparison
Bitcoin is excellent digital money. But it is transparent by design. Every wallet balance, every payment, every merchant relationship is forever public on-chain. Monero solves this.
A decade of
privacy innovation
CryptoNote Whitepaper
The anonymous "Nicolas van Saberhagen" publishes the CryptoNote protocol — the foundational cryptography that would enable untraceable transactions using ring signatures and one-time keys
Monero Is Born
BitMonero launches as a fork of Bytecoin — itself a CryptoNote implementation. The community quickly rebrands it to "Monero." No ICO, no pre-mine, no developer allocation. A fair launch by design
RingCT Activated
Ring Confidential Transactions go live, hiding transaction amounts on-chain for the first time. Monero achieves the full privacy trifecta: hidden sender, hidden receiver, hidden amount
RandomX Mining Algorithm
Monero adopts RandomX, a proof-of-work algorithm specifically designed to be efficient on CPUs and inefficient on ASICs and GPUs. Mining democratizes — anyone with a laptop can participate meaningfully
Dandelion++ & CLSAG
Dandelion++ adds network-layer privacy, obscuring which node originated a transaction. CLSAG ring signatures reduce transaction size by ~25%, making Monero faster and cheaper without sacrificing privacy
Triptych & Seraphis Research
The Monero Research Lab publishes Triptych and begins work on Seraphis — next-generation ring signature schemes that will dramatically increase ring size and provide even stronger anonymity guarantees
LocalMonero Returns
The original LocalMonero peer-to-peer marketplace closes in 2024. We bring it back — rebuilt from scratch as a native desktop app. No web custodian, no KYC gateway. Just private P2P XMR trading the way it was meant to work
Financial privacy
is a human right.
Every time you pay with a card, use a bank transfer, or send Bitcoin, you leave a permanent record that can be accessed by governments, corporations, hackers, and data brokers — often without your knowledge or consent.
Cash solved this for physical transactions. Monero solves it for the digital world. When you receive your salary, buy medication, donate to a cause, or pay a contractor — no one else's business but yours and theirs.
Censorship Resistant
No exchange can blacklist your XMR. No government can freeze a Monero wallet from the outside. Funds are truly yours.
Truly Fungible
Every XMR is identical and interchangeable. No coin carries a "dirty" history. Merchants cannot discriminate based on where your money came from.
Non-Custodial
On LocalMonero, your keys never leave your device. Trade directly from your wallet. Not your keys, not your coins — and with Monero, your keys are private by default.
Open Source Forever
The entire Monero codebase is public on GitHub. Hundreds of researchers audit it every day. The protocol cannot hide backdoors — and neither can LocalMonero.
